Mafia III is an open-world action game set in New Bordeaux, a 1968 stand-in for New Orleans, built around a turf war rather than a mission checklist. You play Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam veteran whose surrogate family — the Black mob — is wiped out by Sal Marcano's Italian crime family. The revenge runs through nine districts, each taken apart racket by racket.
The Definitive Edition (May 19, 2020) bundles the base game with all three story DLCs — Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned and Sign of the Times — plus the Family Kick-Back and Judge, Jury & Executioner packs. One install, everything below applies.

What changed in the October 2026 update
The ten-year anniversary patch is the biggest the game has had: stuck-mission fixes in "Get Enzo Conti", "Kill Tommy Marcano" and the Epilogue; achievement progress that no longer vanishes when you close the game; wiretap data that survives the Stones Unturned DLC; cleaner NPC behaviour. It also added FPS caps at 120/144/180/240 and a window-border toggle, and shipped native PS5 and Xbox Series versions at 60 fps, free for existing owners.
The five rules of New Bordeaux
- Wiretap first. Three TL-49 fuses per junction box. Wiretapped sectors put collectibles and cash on your map — and let you recruit racket bosses instead of killing them.
- Bank your cash. Dying costs you half your wallet. Use the safe at Sammy's Bar, or Vito's Consigliere perk later.
- Every racket is a paycheck. Kickback pays every 24 in-game hours, up to 2% of an underboss's earn.
- Carry two guns, plan three ways in. One sidearm, one two-handed. Whistle to split guards apart; cut phone lines so sentries can't call reinforcements.
- Your underbosses keep score. Assign districts evenly — stripping rackets bleeds loyalty, cuts kickback, and eventually triggers a betrayal.
