Beginner's guide: your first rackets
Do the wiretaps first: every junction box you install (3 TL-49 fuses each) reveals rackets on the map and lets you recruit informants and racket bosses instead of killing them. Bank your cash at Sammy's Bar — dying costs you half of your wallet. And keep taking over rackets: every one you own pays kickback every 24 in-game hours.
Mafia III drops you into Delray Hollow with a knife, a grudge and almost no explanation of the systems that decide whether the next twenty hours are smooth or miserable. This page fixes that: the loop, the money rules and the settings worth changing before you leave the first district.

The loop, in plain language
Every district — nine of them — falls the same way. Each holds two rackets. A racket is "taken" once you have damaged it enough that it stops paying: kill its enforcers, wreck its targets of opportunity (fuse boxes, stills, stashes and shipment trucks marked on your map), and its boss eventually steps out to force a solution. Deal with the boss, repeat for the second racket, and the district's lieutenant — a Marcano family member or a trusted capo — becomes reachable. Kill or spare them, and the district is yours to hand to an underboss at a sitdown.
You do not have to finish a district before starting another. Once rackets are assigned you can work them in any order, and mixing districts early is a legitimate strategy: favors are offered in a fixed sequence across districts, so touching one racket in three different districts quickly unlocks all three favor sets.
Money: wallet, bank and kickback
| System | The rule |
|---|---|
| Kickback | 0.8% to 2% of an underboss's total earn, paid every 24 in-game hours; it does not accumulate, so collect it |
| Contraband run | Delivering stolen shipments to a racket adds $20,000 to that racket's earn |
| Dying | Costs you roughly half of the cash in your wallet |
| Banking | Deposit at the safe in Sammy's Bar, or upgrade Vito's Consigliere perk |
| Recruitment | Recruiting informants and bosses adds to a racket's earn — killing them pays cash now instead |
A racket starts out $20,000 short of its maximum earn, and each trafficking run closes that gap. That means recruiting is about early cash flow, not the ceiling: kill when you need money this hour, recruit when you want the ledger to look healthy on the map.

Combat rules that matter
You carry exactly two firearms — one sidearm, one two-handed — plus thrown explosives and the Screaming Zemi distraction device. The combat knife quietly handles every stealth takedown. Whistling pulls guards one at a time; whistle twice and the target draws a weapon, a third time and everyone knows exactly where you are. Holding the attack button during melee charges a brutal takedown that stuns onlookers — chain them for an achievement, and remember any enforcers left alive will be standing next to the boss at the takeover. Slow-motion shooting (about six seconds, twenty to recharge, headshots extend it) makes silenced pistol work almost trivial once it unlocks in The Way of Flesh.
Settings to change on day one
The October 2026 update added the options players spent a decade asking for: FPS caps at 120, 144, 180 and 240, and a toggle to remove game window borders — check video settings if the game feels capped or your window management annoys you. On the gameplay side, driving offers arcade and simulation handling; simulation rewards smooth inputs, and slow-motion driving (eight seconds, six to refill) can save a chase either way. If a mission ever soft-locks, reload the checkpoint rather than the save — checkpoint behaviour was specifically improved in the 2026 patch.
Beginner mistakes worth avoiding
- Bank before every big mission. Dying on a bank run with a full wallet is the classic Mafia III tax.
- Do not spread every racket to a different underboss at random — assign deliberately, because every racket you later strip costs loyalty (see underbosses).
- Do not ignore junction boxes. Three TL-49 fuses per box in each sector; without them you cannot recruit bosses, and the map hides its secrets.
- Do not leave enforcers alive "for later". They regroup at the boss fight.
- Do not rush the story to reach the endings — the economy you skip is the one that lets you play the finale your way.
