10th anniversary update — Oct 8, 2026 · PS5 & Xbox Series 60 fps versions out now
Mafia III: Definitive Edition

FAQ & troubleshooting

Quick answer

The October 2026 patch fixed the long-standing stuck spots (Get Enzo Conti, Kill Tommy Marcano, the Epilogue), achievement tracking loss, wiretap data vanishing after Stones Unturned, and added 120/144/180/240 FPS caps plus a window-border toggle. If a mission still soft-locks, reload the checkpoint — the patch also improved checkpoint behavior.

Straight answers to the questions that keep coming back — what the October 2026 update actually changed, where the game hides its save system, and which of the old launch-day problems still exist. Everything here is checked against the official Steam update notes and the current build.

The 2026 update, in plain English

The October 8, 2026 anniversary patch is the biggest the game has received in years. In practical terms:

  • Stuck missions are fixed. The long-standing soft-locks in "Get Enzo Conti", "Kill Tommy Marcano" and the Epilogue no longer dead-end runs, and checkpoint reloads behave more predictably across story missions.
  • Achievement tracking was repaired. Progress no longer vanishes if you close the game mid-session, and achievements that failed to fire mid-drive now register.
  • Wiretap data survives. Junction boxes and wiretap map data used to disappear after completing Stones Unturned — that is fixed.
  • New display options. FPS locks at 120, 144, 180 and 240 were added, along with a toggle to remove game window borders and better multi-monitor handling in windowed mode.
  • Lighting and stability. Flickering interiors, over-exposed objects, shadow inconsistencies, cutscene audio gaps and a handful of crash cases (including driving into the Wharf and shooting that gas canister) were all addressed.

Is there a PlayStation 5 / Xbox Series version?

Yes — native PS5 and Xbox Series versions arrived alongside the anniversary update, running at 60 fps with the same quality-of-life fixes, free for anyone who already owns the game or the Omertà Collection. Existing console saves carry over through the platform's usual upgrade path.

Where do I save, and what happens when I die?

Mafia III has no manual save system — it checkpoints constantly, and that is by design. The rule that matters is the wallet: cash you carry is lost on death, at roughly half its value. Deposit at the safe in Sammy's Bar, or unlock the Consigliere perk line and have Betty collect for you. If a mission ever soft-locks anyway, reload the last checkpoint from the pause menu before touching your save slot; the 2026 patch improved checkpoint recovery specifically.

Do I need to buy the DLC separately?

No. The Definitive Edition includes all three story DLCs (Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, Sign of the Times) and both bonus packs in the base install. There is nothing sold separately to chase — if you see "DLC" prompts in menus, that content is already yours.

What does the game cost right now?

The Definitive Edition lists at $29.99 and is 80% off in the 10th-anniversary franchise sale that runs to October 22, 2026, which puts it at $5.99 at the time of writing. The Omertà Collection bundle (all four Mafia games) is 50% off in the same window. Prices rotate quickly with 2K sales, so check the store page before buying.

Does the old technical baggage still exist?

Most of the infamous stuff is gone; a few games of whack-a-mole survive in player reports. Frame-pacing complaints from launch are far quieter now that the FPS caps exist. What remains genuinely unchanged is design, not bugs: enemies respawn if you abandon an area mid-objective, rackets reuse layouts across districts, and the police are faster than you remember. Those are the game, not the patch — the accolades page digs into why the 2016 reviews split the way they did.

Which order should I play everything in?

Base campaign first — or at least its first four districts — then the DLCs in release order (Faster, Baby! → Stones Unturned → Sign of the Times). The walkthrough has the district order, and the DLC guide explains what each expansion unlocks before you commit an evening to it.

Something is still broken — where do I report it?

If you hit a reproducible bug on the current build, the Steam community hub and 2K support are the channels that reach the developers. For anything wrong on this site — a number that does not match, a location we got backwards — the contact page has the address, and corrections are genuinely welcome.
